The Guardian Hose Company holds an annual Carnival, usually the full week (Monday through Saturday) that immediately follows the 4th of July. The Carnival is held at our Carnival Grounds, located in the 100 block of East Main Street (Route 77) in Thurmont. President Emeritus Don Stitely spearheads the Carnival Committee and has been doing so for many, many years. He starts working on the Carnival for next year shortly after the current year's Carnival concludes. Ably assisted by his wife, Georgette, Don works tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to make sure each year's Carnival is a success and that no detail is overlooked. Thank you Don and Georgette for your hard work! We serve great food (including our incredible Italian Sausage sandwich with sautéed onions, green peppers, and special sauce, plus our Woelfel Brothers Famous Pizza), snow cones, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, onion rings, and ice cold soft drinks. Nightly entertainment includes a variety of bands playing music of different tastes. Recent bands have included the bluegrass favorite Fastest Grass Alive and the immensely popular oldies band Big Cam and the Lifters. Bingo games are held nightly featuring merchandise prizes. Dedicated fire company personnel, assisted by some non-members, staff the food stands, the Bingo hall, and a variety of low priced midway games including the Glass Pitch, a dunking booth, and the Pocketbook Game. Majestic Midways of York, Pennsylvania brings in great carnival rides for us every year including a number of rides that are age-appropriate for younger children. Discounted ride tickets are on sale before the Carnival from fire company members and participating local banks. A Firemen's Parade and a spectacular fireworks display are additional highlights of this fund raising effort that significantly benefits the Guardian Hose Company.
