Membership in the Guardian Hose Company is open to all persons over the age of 16 who work or reside in the Thurmont Maryland area. While not everyone has the desire to crawl about in smoke-filled structures or to climb a ladder to a steep, slippery roof, there are many other avenues in which members provide vital assistance to the Company.

We have three membership categories as follows:

Active Administrative: A member who participates in the non-emergency side of this organization.  Examples include:  assisting in administration of the company, participating in fundraisers, and holding administrative office.

Active Emergency Operation:  A member who participates in the operation of this organization as set forth by the Officers and Company Standard Operating Guidelines ('SOG').  Examples include:  running emergency calls, participating in fundraisers, or assisting in the administration of the company and holding office. Certain requirements and standards are prescribed in the By-Laws and the SOG’s. A face piece fit test and physical are required.  There is no cost to the member for the fit test or physical. and the forms are available from the department.

Social: A member who does not participate in the operations of this organization as set forth by the Board of Directors and the company Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG).  Social members are encouraged to attend company meetings, assist with fundraising, and participate in social gatherings.

Social Members typically serve on the Activities Committee. Among the roles that the Activities Committee members assume are spearheading several fund raisers a year and assisting at the scene of fires and other emergencies with refreshments and beverages for firefighters.

If you are interested in joining the Guardian Hose Company, please contact any current member or stop by the Fire Hall. Applicants are subject to review by the Membership Committee and a background check will be conducted on all new applicants.

Persons moving to our area who are currently members of other fire departments are strongly encouraged to apply for membership. If possible, please submit copies of your training records and a letter of recommendation, on company letterhead, from either the President or Chief of their current fire department.

Applicants for membership should download both of the following files, complete the forms, and submit them to the Fire Company. Application forms without the required Background Check Forms will be rejected with no further consideration.
