Immediately adjacent to the Fire Hall on the south side was the Birely residence. Note in the picture below that a narrow alley was all that separated the two properties. A similar situation existed on the north side of the Fire Hall; a narrow alley ran between the Fire Hall and the parsonage of the Thurmont Methodist Church.
The Birely residence was purchased by the Guardian Hose Company on July 26, 1962 and was razed to make room for a very badly needed parking lot so that fire company members responding to emergency calls would have some place to park their vehicles. Below is the Birely residence from another angle; the Fire Hall is visible in the background.
