Rescue Squad Runs Mutual Aide to Emmitsburg for Bus Accident
Fri. Mar 22nd 2019

At 0942hrs on Friday March 22, 2019 Rescue Box 6-20 was sounded for a Bus Accident on Route 15 at Creamery Rd. Rescue Squad 10 responded mutual aide as the second squad on the assignment.

A69 (Emmitsburg) arrived first to find 3 vehicles involved; a Charter Bus, Passenger Car and a Propane Truck. The Charter bus was partially off the roadway and all occupants were still on board the bus. It was determined there were 47 9th grade students, 4 adult chaperones and the driver on board and there were no reported injuries.RS10 arrived a short time later and assisted the crew from RS6 and E63 to stabilize the bus as it was leaning to the right and the left rear tires were completely off the ground.

After Crews were able to stabilize the bus the crews worked on removing the door to the bus. The door to the bus was jammed into the inside of the bus as this is where the bus and tractor trailer had collided. Crews used the HURST tools off of RS6 to cut the door free from the bus and allow all 52 occupants on board to exit safely.

When crews cut the door away all the occupants were assisted off the bus and sent to a triage area where the patients were assessed and sent to ambulances arriving on the scene. After further evaluation it was determined there were 3 patients that needed to be transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

The occupants onboard the bus were from a school in Schuylkill County, PA and were headed to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.

This incident had the potential to be a large scale incident and escalate quickly but due to the fast response of all units and the teamwork of all companies on scene the situation was able to be mitigated in a timely manner and handled with safety first.

Units: RS6 (Emmitsburg), RS10, M30 (Frederick County ALS Unit), A69 (Emmitsburg), A68 (Emmitsburg), A308 (Thurmont Ambulance), A307 (Thurmont Ambulance), E63 (Emmitsburg), E133 (Rocky Ridge), Battalion 902 (Northern Battalion Chief) and Safety Officer 901 (Frederick County Safety Officer)
